The Veil Nebula is a remnant of a supernova whose explosion dates back around ten thousand years, constituting the "swan's lace". This object is very vast and fragmented. The image therefore only shows one of the remnants.

A supernova is an extremely massive star, at least more than eight solar masses, and which is already the result of a star that collapsed on itself. Its spectacular end of life ends in a gigantic and powerful explosion which will spread heavy atomic elements, gold and uranium for example) which will be useful to the interstellar medium and to the hydrogen clouds which will thus make it possible to create stars again from of these residues. This explosion is also so powerful that the shock wave will create disturbances and cause the gas clouds to contract and encourage the creation of new stars.

The supernova explosion took place during the Neolithic era on Earth. We can therefore imagine the impact that this sudden and brilliant appearance must have had.

The image presented, named the "Great Lace" because it is the largest remnant, was produced using an L-Ultimate filter in order to best bring out its composition and its tangled filaments.
